Tour Overview
16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp
An Extraordinary Himalayan Journey Through Sacred Tibetan Monasteries, Mount Everest, Nepal’s Ancient Kingdoms, Scenic Lakes & Wildlife-Rich Jungles
Discover two of the Himalayas’ most captivating destinations on our 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour, an immersive journey combining the spiritual heritage and dramatic high-altitude landscapes of Tibet with Nepal’s ancient cities, magnificent mountain scenery, vibrant cultures, and subtropical wildlife.
Beginning in Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet, explore magnificent Buddhist monasteries, sacred temples, and historic palaces before embarking on an unforgettable overland adventure across the Tibetan Plateau to the north face of Mount Everest. Stand beneath the world’s highest mountain at Everest Base Camp, surrounded by extraordinary Himalayan scenery, before returning to Lhasa and taking a spectacular flight across the Himalayas to Kathmandu.
In Nepal, discover an entirely different side of the Himalayas. Explore UNESCO World Heritage sites, walk through centuries-old marketplaces, visit sacred Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage destinations, and experience the rich artistic traditions of the Kathmandu Valley. Continue into Nepal’s scenic countryside, where historic hilltop fortresses, traditional villages, peaceful lakes, and lush national parks reveal the country’s remarkable geographical and cultural diversity.
This carefully designed Tibet and Nepal with Everest Base Camp itinerary brings together the region’s most memorable experiences in one seamless adventure.
Tibet: Sacred Monasteries & the North Face of Mount Everest
Your journey begins in Lhasa (3,650 m / 11,975 ft), where ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions remain deeply woven into everyday life. Visit the magnificent Potala Palace, the revered Jokhang Temple, the bustling Barkhor pilgrimage circuit, and the great monastic institutions of Drepung and Sera, where centuries-old religious scholarship and lively philosophical debates continue.
From Lhasa, travel across the spectacular Tibetan Plateau, following scenic mountain roads past the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, the impressive Karola Glacier, and the historic towns of Gyantse and Shigatse.
The highlight of your Tibetan adventure is the journey to Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side, situated at approximately 5,200 m (17,060 ft). Cross high Himalayan passes with sweeping mountain panoramas before transferring to the designated eco-shuttle for the final approach to the Everest Base Camp area.
Here, experience the extraordinary sight of Mount Everest’s immense north face rising above the rugged plateau. Enjoy the possibility of sunset and sunrise views, visit the historic Rongbuk Monastery area, and spend a memorable night beneath the world’s highest mountain.
Continue through Tibet’s dramatic landscapes, visiting the historic Sakya and Tashilhunpo monasteries before returning to Lhasa.
Across the Himalayas: From Lhasa to Kathmandu by Air
One of the most distinctive experiences of this journey is the scenic flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu, crossing the Himalayan mountain system that separates the Tibetan Plateau from Nepal’s lush valleys.
Weather permitting, the flight offers breathtaking aerial views of snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, and rugged mountain ridges.
Unlike traditional Tibet-to-Nepal overland itineraries, this journey does not depend on the uncertain reopening of the Gyirong–Rasuwagadhi land border. Instead, you complete your Everest Base Camp adventure in Tibet, return to Lhasa, and fly to Kathmandu, where your Nepalese guide and driver welcome you for the next chapter of your journey.
Nepal: Ancient Kingdoms, Living Traditions & Himalayan Beauty
In Kathmandu, discover a fascinating blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions while exploring some of the country’s most important cultural landmarks.
Visit Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and the historic royal squares of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan. Wander through traditional markets, admire intricately carved Newar architecture, and experience the vibrant daily life of Nepal’s capital.
Beyond the Kathmandu Valley, travel through beautiful river valleys and terraced hillsides to the sacred Manakamana Temple, reached by a scenic cable car ride. Continue to historic Gorkha, the ancestral homeland of the Shah dynasty and the birthplace of Nepal’s political unification, where a hilltop royal fortress preserves centuries of history.
Your journey then leads to Pokhara, Nepal’s picturesque lake city nestled beneath the Annapurna Himalayas. Witness sunrise over the snow-covered Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from Sarangkot, enjoy a peaceful boat ride across Phewa Lake, and visit the World Peace Pagoda and Pumdikot Shiva statue.
A visit to a Tibetan refugee settlement in Pokhara offers an especially meaningful cultural connection, revealing how Tibetan communities in Nepal continue to preserve their religious traditions, craftsmanship, and cultural identity.
Chitwan National Park: Wildlife Adventures in Nepal’s Subtropical Lowlands
The final part of your adventure introduces you to the lush subtropical landscapes of Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rich biodiversity and successful wildlife conservation efforts.
Explore forests, grasslands, wetlands, and river habitats through guided jeep safaris, nature walks, birdwatching, and river excursions.
Accompanied by experienced naturalists, search for the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros, several species of deer, crocodiles, colorful birdlife, and, with exceptional luck, the elusive Bengal tiger.
Your stay at a comfortable jungle resort provides a refreshing contrast to the high-altitude landscapes of Tibet and the cultural discoveries of Nepal.
Return to Kathmandu on a short domestic flight from Bharatpur, with time to explore the artistic treasures of historic Patan before your international departure.
A Remarkable Journey Through Two Himalayan Worlds
What makes this Tibet Nepal Tour particularly rewarding is the extraordinary contrast between its destinations.
In Tibet, encounter vast high-altitude landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, remote mountain settlements, and the unforgettable north face of Mount Everest. In Nepal, experience colorful Hindu and Buddhist traditions, medieval royal cities, picturesque Himalayan foothills, serene lakes, and subtropical forests alive with wildlife.
Throughout the journey, travel with knowledgeable local guides, experienced drivers, carefully selected accommodations, and thoughtfully arranged sightseeing experiences.
The itinerary includes time to acclimatize in Lhasa before traveling to higher elevations, while the Nepal portion offers a comfortable balance of cultural discovery, scenic travel, and nature-based experiences.
No trekking experience is required to reach Everest Base Camp on this itinerary. The Tibetan portion uses road transportation and the designated Everest Base Camp eco-shuttle, although the high altitude, mountain passes, and occasional uneven walking surfaces require appropriate preparation.
Whether you are drawn to Tibetan Buddhist spirituality, the grandeur of Mount Everest, Nepal’s living heritage, or the thrill of observing wildlife in its natural habitat, this Tibet Everest Base Camp and Nepal Tour offers an exceptional opportunity to experience the many faces of the Himalayas.

Trip Info
Our 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp is ideal for travelers seeking an immersive Himalayan adventure that combines extraordinary mountain scenery, ancient cultures, sacred Buddhist and Hindu sites, historic cities, and memorable wildlife experiences.
This is primarily a cultural sightseeing and scenic exploration tour, not a trekking expedition. It is designed for travelers who enjoy discovering new places at a comfortable pace, appreciate meaningful cultural encounters, and are prepared for the unique conditions of Himalayan travel.
Who Will Enjoy This Tour Most?
Culture & History Enthusiasts: Explore Tibet's magnificent monasteries, Nepal's UNESCO World Heritage sites, medieval royal cities, traditional marketplaces, and centuries-old religious traditions.
Himalayan Scenery Lovers: Experience the spectacular north face of Mount Everest, turquoise alpine lakes, dramatic mountain passes, and panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
Active Sightseers: Enjoy guided walking tours, historic temples, scenic viewpoints, and gentle outdoor activities without undertaking a multi-day trek.
Photography Enthusiasts: Capture Himalayan landscapes, colorful Buddhist monasteries, intricate Newar architecture, traditional village life, and wildlife in natural habitats.
Nature & Wildlife Lovers: Discover Chitwan National Park through guided jungle safaris, river excursions, birdwatching, and nature walks.
Curious & Open-Minded Travelers: Experience the fascinating contrasts between Tibetan Buddhist culture and Nepal's diverse Hindu, Buddhist, and ethnic traditions.
Physical Activity & Fitness Level
Activity Level: Moderate Sightseeing with High-Altitude Exposure
No technical climbing or trekking experience is required.
Most days involve a combination of guided sightseeing, short walks, and scenic drives. However, some historic sites and monasteries have stone staircases, uneven pathways, and uphill approaches.
Travelers should be comfortable walking approximately 2–5 km (1–3 miles) on active sightseeing days, with opportunities to rest along the way.
The Everest Base Camp experience is reached by vehicle and designated eco-shuttle rather than trekking. Nevertheless, the high elevation makes even gentle physical activity more demanding.
A reasonable level of fitness, regular walking habits, and a willingness to adjust your pace are recommended.
A Journey of Remarkable Contrasts
One of the greatest attractions of this tour is the opportunity to experience two distinctly different Himalayan worlds.
In Tibet, discover vast high-altitude landscapes, sacred Buddhist monasteries, ancient pilgrimage traditions, and the extraordinary grandeur of Mount Everest.
In Nepal, explore vibrant historic cities, beautiful Himalayan foothills, peaceful lakes, traditional villages, and the subtropical wildlife habitats of Chitwan National Park.
A scenic flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu connects these two destinations, allowing you to experience their remarkable geographical and cultural diversity within one journey.
Flexibility & Cultural Awareness
Traveling through the Himalayas rewards patience, curiosity, and an open mind.
Religious ceremonies, local festivals, wildlife encounters, and mountain views are influenced by daily schedules, weather, and seasonal conditions.
Some sightseeing arrangements may need to be adjusted, and travelers should be comfortable respecting local customs, religious practices, and community traditions.
These spontaneous encounters and cultural differences are often among the most memorable aspects of the journey.
Is This Tour Suitable for Seniors?
Yes, for active seniors who are comfortable with moderate sightseeing and have appropriate medical clearance for high-altitude travel.
The itinerary does not require strenuous trekking, and many cultural visits can be adapted to individual walking preferences.
However, the high-altitude Everest Base Camp overnight, occasional steep staircases, and extended travel days may not suit everyone.
We encourage travelers with specific mobility, health, or pacing requirements to discuss their needs with us before booking.
Who Might Prefer a Different Journey?
This tour may be less suitable for travelers seeking a completely leisurely holiday, those unable to manage moderate walking and occasional stairs, or those who prefer to avoid high-altitude environments.
Travelers looking for a physically demanding Everest trek should also consider a dedicated trekking itinerary instead.
The Bottom Line
If you are fascinated by Himalayan cultures, dream of seeing Mount Everest up close, enjoy exploring ancient cities and sacred landmarks, and appreciate the opportunity to experience Nepal's scenic beauty and wildlife, this journey offers an exceptional combination of experiences.
It is especially rewarding for travelers who value cultural immersion, natural beauty, and authentic local encounters—and who approach Himalayan travel with curiosity, flexibility, and a spirit of adventure.
The 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp takes you through dramatically different elevations and environments—from the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau and Himalayan mountain passes to Nepal's temperate valleys and subtropical lowlands. Understanding these contrasts will help you prepare for a comfortable and rewarding journey.
Altitude & Elevation Changes
The Tibet portion of the journey involves sustained travel at high elevations, including an overnight stay near Everest Base Camp.
Lhasa: 3,650 m / 11,975 ft
Shigatse: 3,840 m / 12,598 ft
Gyatso La Pass: 5,248 m / 17,218 ft
Everest Base Camp: Approximately 5,200 m / 17,060 ft
Kathmandu: 1,350 m / 4,430 ft
Pokhara: 822 m / 2,697 ft
Chitwan National Park: Approximately 150–200 m / 492–656 ft
The itinerary begins with three nights in Lhasa to allow initial acclimatization before traveling to higher elevations. However, the overnight stay near Everest Base Camp remains a significant high-altitude exposure.
Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness or previous mountain experience. Travelers should recognize early symptoms, communicate promptly with their guide, and follow appropriate medical advice. Detailed information about altitude-related health risks, prevention, and emergency procedures is provided in our separate Critical Health Considerations and Vaccination Guide.
Climate & Temperature Variations
The journey crosses several distinct climatic zones, creating considerable differences in temperature and weather conditions.
Tibetan Plateau: Generally dry, with strong sunshine, low humidity, cool mornings, and significant temperature differences between day and night.
High Mountain Passes & Everest Base Camp: Cold, windy, and exposed, with freezing temperatures possible even during otherwise mild travel seasons.
Kathmandu Valley: Generally warmer and more temperate than Tibet, with seasonal variations in rainfall and humidity.
Pokhara: Mild to warm, with a relatively humid climate and frequent cloud cover or rainfall during the monsoon season.
Chitwan Lowlands: Subtropical conditions, often hot and humid, particularly during spring, summer, and the monsoon.
Travelers should prepare for both cold Himalayan conditions and warm, humid lowland environments within the same itinerary.
Sun Exposure, Wind & Dry Air
At high elevations, ultraviolet radiation is particularly intense, even when temperatures feel cool.
Carry high-SPF sunscreen, UV-protective sunglasses, lip balm, and a wide-brimmed hat. The dry air and persistent winds of the Tibetan Plateau can also cause dehydration, dry skin, and irritated lips.
Drink water regularly, protect exposed skin, and dress in layers that can be adjusted as conditions change.
Seasonal Weather & Visibility
Spring and autumn generally offer favorable conditions for exploring Tibet and Nepal, although mountain weather remains unpredictable.
Clear skies can provide spectacular views of Mount Everest, the Annapurna range, and other Himalayan peaks, but cloud cover, snowfall, wind, or rain may occasionally limit visibility.
During Nepal's monsoon season, heavy rainfall can affect roads, outdoor sightseeing, river excursions, and wildlife activities. Winter brings colder temperatures to Tibet, particularly around Everest Base Camp.
Mountain views, sunrise experiences, and wildlife sightings are natural phenomena and cannot be guaranteed.
Environmental Responsibility
Both Tibet and Nepal contain fragile mountain ecosystems and culturally significant natural landscapes.
We encourage travelers to minimize single-use plastics, dispose of waste responsibly, remain on designated trails, respect protected wildlife habitats, and follow local environmental regulations.
At Everest Base Camp, visitors use the designated environmental transit system to reduce vehicle impacts in the protected area. In Chitwan, all wildlife activities must follow national park regulations and naturalist instructions.
Our Advice: Pack versatile clothing suitable for both freezing mountain conditions and warm subtropical weather. Be prepared for sudden changes in temperature, strong sunlight, variable mountain visibility, and occasional itinerary adjustments caused by weather or environmental conditions.
Traveling through Tibet and Nepal involves significant changes in altitude, climate, and access to medical facilities. While most travelers complete their journey without serious health problems, appropriate medical preparation is particularly important because the itinerary includes an overnight stay near Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,200 m (17,060 ft).
The following guidance outlines the principal health considerations for this journey. It should complement, not replace, personalized advice from your physician or a qualified travel medicine specialist.
Pre-Departure Medical Consultation
Schedule a consultation with your physician or travel medicine clinic ideally 4–6 weeks before departure, or earlier if you have an existing medical condition.
Discuss your planned high-altitude exposure, current health, prescription medications, vaccination history, and any previous difficulties with altitude.
Travelers with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, significant anemia, sleep-related breathing disorders, or other serious medical concerns should obtain individualized medical advice before committing to the Everest Base Camp portion of the journey.
Carry sufficient prescription medication for the entire trip, plus a reserve for unexpected delays. Keep medicines in their original labeled packaging, together with copies of prescriptions and relevant medical documentation.
Recommended Vaccinations & Disease Prevention
Vaccination recommendations depend on your medical history, nationality, previous immunizations, and travel plans.
Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap), polio, influenza, COVID-19, and other age-appropriate routine vaccinations are current.
Hepatitis A: Recommended for unvaccinated travelers because infection can spread through contaminated food or water.
Hepatitis B: Recommended for unvaccinated travelers, particularly because unexpected medical treatment or exposure to blood and bodily fluids can occur during international travel.
Typhoid: Often recommended for travel involving local food, smaller towns, and areas where food and water sanitation may be inconsistent.
Rabies: Consider pre-exposure vaccination based on anticipated animal contact and access to prompt medical care. Avoid touching or feeding dogs, monkeys, and other animals.
Japanese Encephalitis: Discuss your itinerary and travel season with a specialist. Risk is generally associated with particular rural and lowland environments, especially during periods of mosquito activity.
Malaria: Review current destination-specific recommendations with your travel clinic, particularly for the Chitwan portion of the journey. Preventing mosquito bites is important even where malaria medication is not recommended.
Yellow Fever: A vaccination certificate may be required for entry to Nepal depending on recent travel through countries with yellow fever transmission risk. It is not routinely required solely because you are visiting Tibet and Nepal.
For current country-specific guidance, consult the CDC's official travel health resources:
Altitude Sickness: Prevention & Warning Signs
High-altitude illness is the most significant medical consideration during the Tibet portion of this journey. Spending three nights in Lhasa allows some initial acclimatization, but it does not eliminate the risk associated with sleeping near Everest Base Camp.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can cause headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite. More serious complications include High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both of which can be life-threatening.
To reduce your risk:
Discuss Acetazolamide (Diamox): Ask your physician whether preventive medication is appropriate for your health and ascent profile. Do not self-prescribe.
Take It Easy: Avoid strenuous exercise during initial acclimatization and maintain a comfortable walking pace at higher elevations.
Maintain Normal Hydration: Drink regularly according to thirst and avoid dehydration, but do not force excessive water intake.
Avoid Alcohol & Sedatives: Particularly during acclimatization, avoid alcohol and medications that may suppress breathing unless specifically approved by your physician.
Report Symptoms Immediately: Inform your guide about headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness, or changes in breathing. Never conceal symptoms to continue the itinerary.
Important: Do not ascend to sleep at a higher elevation while experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness. Worsening symptoms, breathlessness at rest, confusion, difficulty walking normally, or other signs of severe illness require urgent medical assessment and descent to a lower elevation. Supplemental oxygen may be used when available, but it is not a substitute for descent and appropriate medical treatment.
Your guide will coordinate necessary itinerary changes and emergency assistance when conditions require them.
Food, Water & Personal Hygiene
Food and water hygiene is important throughout Tibet and Nepal, especially in rural areas and remote mountain locations.
Drink sealed bottled water or properly boiled, filtered, or disinfected water. Avoid untreated tap water.
Choose freshly prepared, thoroughly cooked meals and exercise caution with raw foods, unpeeled fruit, and unpasteurized dairy products.
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, particularly before meals. Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer for situations where washing facilities are unavailable.
Carry oral rehydration salts and seek medical advice if diarrhea is severe, persistent, bloody, or accompanied by fever or dehydration.
Mosquitoes, Animals & Outdoor Health
In Nepal's warmer lowlands, particularly around Chitwan, protect yourself from mosquito bites by using an effective insect repellent, wearing suitable clothing, and using screened or air-conditioned accommodation where available.
Avoid contact with stray dogs, monkeys, and other mammals. Any bite or scratch should be washed immediately and assessed urgently by a medical professional, even if you have received pre-exposure rabies vaccination.
During jungle excursions, follow your naturalist's instructions and avoid walking independently in wildlife habitats.
Personal Travel Health Kit
Carry a compact medical kit containing:
Regular prescription medicines and copies of prescriptions.
Physician-approved altitude medication, if prescribed.
Familiar pain relievers and anti-nausea medication, as medically appropriate.
Oral rehydration salts and suitable medication for traveler's diarrhea.
Adhesive bandages, blister dressings, antiseptic wipes, and basic first-aid supplies.
Insect repellent, hand sanitizer, and any personal medical essentials.
Consult your physician about medication interactions, allergies, and whether prescription treatment for severe traveler's diarrhea or altitude emergencies is appropriate.
Medical Insurance & Emergency Evacuation
Comprehensive travel medical insurance with emergency evacuation coverage for activities and overnight stays at elevations of at least 5,200 m (17,060 ft) is required for this journey. We recommend coverage extending to at least 5,500 m (18,045 ft) to provide an appropriate margin for the itinerary.
Before purchasing a policy, confirm that it covers:
Medical treatment for altitude-related illness.
Emergency evacuation from remote areas of Tibet, including medically necessary ground transport and any available air evacuation arrangements.
Emergency medical evacuation and treatment in Nepal.
Hospitalization, repatriation, and trip interruption where applicable.
Emergency services in remote Tibet may be limited, and helicopter evacuation should not be assumed to be available. Weather, geography, permits, and local operating conditions can affect response times and evacuation options.
Keep your insurance details, emergency assistance number, and relevant medical information readily accessible throughout the journey.
Final Health Advice: Consult a qualified travel medicine professional well before departure, follow your local guides' safety instructions, and report health concerns promptly. Careful preparation and flexibility are essential for safely enjoying the remarkable cultural and natural experiences of Tibet and Nepal.
The 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp combines scenic mountain drives, comfortable private transportation, designated Everest Base Camp eco-shuttles, and domestic and international flights. Road conditions vary considerably between Tibet's high-altitude highways and Nepal's winding mountain roads and subtropical lowlands.
Throughout the journey, transportation is arranged with experienced local drivers and suitable vehicles, allowing you to enjoy the remarkable landscapes while leaving navigation and logistics to your professional travel team.
Road Conditions in Tibet
Tibet's principal sightseeing routes are served by paved highways, including the roads connecting Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse, and the Everest region.
Lhasa to Shigatse via Gyantse: Travel along scenic paved mountain roads, crossing high passes and visiting Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, and historic Gyantse.
Shigatse to Everest Base Camp: Follow the Friendship Highway and mountain roads through dramatic plateau landscapes, with winding ascents, hairpin bends, and high-altitude viewpoints.
Everest Base Camp to Shigatse: Return along mountain highways, with a cultural excursion to Sakya Monastery.
Shigatse to Lhasa: Follow the northern highway corridor along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, offering a relatively direct return to the Tibetan capital.
Although these routes are generally paved, travel speeds may be slower than expected because of winding roads, altitude, checkpoints, speed restrictions, weather, and occasional maintenance.
Everest Base Camp Eco-Shuttle Transfer
Private tourist vehicles do not normally continue directly to the designated Everest Base Camp visitor area.
At the Tashizom environmental transit hub, travelers transfer to an authorized zero-emission shuttle for the final approximately 38 km (24 miles) to the Everest Base Camp area.
The shuttle journey generally takes around 30–40 minutes, depending on operating conditions.
After the Everest Base Camp visit, the same transport arrangement is used to return to the transit hub, where your private driver resumes the journey.
Shuttle schedules, access restrictions, and operating arrangements are subject to local regulations.
Private Vehicles & Local Drivers in Tibet
Transportation is provided in an appropriately sized, licensed tourist vehicle with a professional Tibetan driver. Vehicle assignments depend on passenger numbers, luggage requirements, and local availability.
Your licensed Tibetan guide accompanies you throughout the Tibet sightseeing program, while the professional driver handles transportation and road logistics.
Road Conditions & Transportation in Nepal
Nepal's road network offers beautiful scenery but can be more variable than Tibet's principal highways.
The itinerary includes private road transfers between Kathmandu, Gorkha, Pokhara, and Chitwan, as well as local sightseeing excursions.
Kathmandu Valley: Roads are generally paved, but traffic congestion, narrow historic streets, and occasional roadworks can slow travel.
Kathmandu to Gorkha: The journey follows major highways through river valleys and hill country, with winding sections and possible construction delays.
Gorkha to Pokhara: Travel through Nepal's middle hills, passing rural settlements, agricultural landscapes, and river valleys.
Pokhara to Chitwan: Descend from the Himalayan foothills toward the subtropical Terai, using mountain roads and regional highways.
Chitwan National Park: Wildlife activities use designated safari vehicles, boats, or guided walking routes, depending on the excursion.
Road surfaces and travel times can be affected by traffic, seasonal rainfall, landslides, road improvements, and local conditions.
Driving durations shown in the itinerary are estimates rather than guaranteed arrival times.
Flights Between Tibet and Nepal
The journey includes a flight from Lhasa Gonggar International Airport (LXA) to Kathmandu (KTM).
This flight replaces the traditional overland border crossing between Tibet and Nepal. Travelers return to Lhasa after visiting Everest Base Camp and continue to Nepal by air.
A nonstop flight, when operating, takes approximately 1.5 hours. Actual flight availability, routing, and schedules must be confirmed for the travel dates.
Weather conditions may affect flight operations and mountain visibility.
Domestic Flight from Chitwan to Kathmandu
At the conclusion of your Chitwan stay, transfer to Bharatpur Airport (BHR) for the approximately 20–25-minute domestic flight to Kathmandu.
This flight is the planned transportation arrangement for the tour, avoiding a lengthy return drive to the capital.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, continue by private vehicle for your Patan sightseeing excursion and hotel transfer.
Domestic flights are subject to weather, airline schedules, and operational conditions.
Driving Comfort & Travel Breaks
Your drivers and guides coordinate suitable stops for sightseeing, photography, refreshments, and restroom breaks whenever practical.
Some travel days involve several hours in the vehicle, particularly during the Tibet Everest Base Camp excursion and Nepal's intercity transfers.
Travelers prone to motion sickness should consult their physician about suitable preventive medication, as mountain roads include winding sections and repeated bends.
Seat belts should be worn whenever available, and travelers should remain seated while vehicles are moving.
Travel Flexibility & Safety
Mountain transportation requires flexibility. Weather changes, road maintenance, traffic restrictions, checkpoints, and flight disruptions may occasionally require adjustments to the planned schedule.
Your local team will coordinate necessary changes while prioritizing traveler safety and maintaining the itinerary's principal experiences wherever reasonably possible.
Our Advice: Approach the longer driving days as part of the Himalayan experience. The journey itself offers spectacular mountain passes, river valleys, traditional settlements, and constantly changing landscapes that are among the highlights of traveling through Tibet and Nepal.
Accommodation on our 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp is carefully selected to balance comfort, convenient locations, local character, and the practical realities of traveling through the Himalayas.
Throughout the journey, you will stay in comfortable tourist-class and boutique hotels, scenic countryside resorts, and a wildlife lodge. The principal exception is the overnight stay near Everest Base Camp, where accommodation is basic due to the remote location and extreme altitude.
Accommodation in Tibet
In Lhasa and Shigatse, we use well-located hotels offering comfortable rooms, private bathrooms, and essential modern amenities.
Lhasa: Tibet Gorkha Hotel or similar, providing a convenient base for exploring the city's monasteries, temples, and historic neighborhoods.
Shigatse: Gesar Hotel or similar, offering comfortable accommodation before and after the Everest Base Camp excursion.
Everest Base Camp: Rongbuk Hotel or an available seasonal accommodation option near the designated visitor area.
Hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse generally provide private bathrooms, hot showers, heating or air conditioning where available, Wi-Fi, and basic toiletries. Facilities and service standards may differ from those of similarly rated hotels in Western countries.
Everest Base Camp: A Unique Overnight Experience
Spending a night near Everest Base Camp is one of the most memorable experiences of the journey, offering the possibility of witnessing sunset and sunrise over Mount Everest's magnificent north face.
However, accommodation at approximately 5,200 m (17,060 ft) is considerably more basic than in Tibet's cities.
Depending on the season and local operating arrangements, accommodation may be provided at Rongbuk Hotel or in designated seasonal guest facilities.
Travelers should anticipate:
Simple rooms or sleeping arrangements, with limited comfort and furnishings.
Basic or shared bathroom facilities, depending on the accommodation.
Limited hot water, heating, and electricity.
Restricted Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity.
Simple meals and limited dining choices.
Very cold nighttime temperatures, even during otherwise favorable travel seasons.
Room configurations, bathroom access, and availability can change with local regulations and seasonal operations. Private bathrooms and reliable heating cannot be guaranteed.
We recommend bringing warm sleeping clothes and keeping essential personal items readily accessible.
Accommodation in Nepal
The Nepal portion of the journey offers a more varied range of comfortable hotels and resorts, reflecting the country's diverse landscapes and travel experiences.
Kathmandu – Nomad Hotel or Similar: Comfortable city accommodation with convenient access to restaurants, shops, and major sightseeing attractions.
Gorkha – Gorkha Gaun Resort or Similar: A peaceful countryside retreat offering traditional architectural character and scenic hill-country surroundings.
Pokhara – Atithi Resort & Spa or Similar: Resort-style accommodation with landscaped grounds and convenient access to Pokhara's lakeside attractions.
Chitwan – Jungle Villa Resort or Similar: A nature-focused resort providing comfortable accommodation and convenient access to organized wildlife activities.
Nepal's city hotels and established resorts generally offer private bathrooms, hot showers, electricity, Wi-Fi, and comfortable bedding. Selected properties may also provide swimming pools, spa services, gardens, restaurants, or other recreational facilities.
Specific amenities depend on the confirmed hotel and room category. Optional services such as spa treatments, laundry, and minibar purchases are generally charged separately.
Room Categories & Occupancy
Standard tour accommodation is generally arranged on a twin-sharing or double-sharing basis.
Double Rooms: One large bed for two guests, subject to availability.
Twin Rooms: Two separate beds for two guests, subject to availability.
Single Rooms: Available at an additional single-room supplement, subject to confirmation.
Triple Rooms: May be possible at selected properties, although availability and comfort vary.
Room preferences should be communicated when booking. Bedding configurations cannot always be guaranteed, particularly at Everest Base Camp.
Electricity, Charging & Internet
Electricity and mobile connectivity are generally available in major cities, but service reliability varies by location.
Tibet: Hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse generally provide electricity and internet access, although some international websites and communication services are restricted in mainland China, including Tibet.
Everest Base Camp: Electricity, charging facilities, and mobile reception may be intermittent or limited.
Nepal: Hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Gorkha, and Chitwan generally offer electricity and Wi-Fi, although occasional power or connectivity interruptions can occur.
Travelers should bring a universal travel adapter and a fully charged power bank. China and Nepal use different electrical socket configurations, and some hotels provide multiple socket types.
Internet access should not be considered guaranteed throughout the journey, especially in remote mountain areas.
Bathrooms, Hot Water & Heating
Private bathrooms with Western-style toilets and hot showers are generally available at the selected city hotels and resorts.
However, travelers should expect variations in water pressure, hot-water availability, room heating, and bathroom fixtures.
At Everest Base Camp and some remote roadside facilities, toilets may be shared or basic, and hot showers may be unavailable.
Heating is particularly important in Tibet, where nighttime temperatures can drop sharply. Hotels may use central heating, room heaters, or electric blankets, depending on the property and season.
Hotel Standards & Possible Substitutions
Hotel classifications and service standards in Tibet and Nepal may differ from international expectations. We prioritize cleanliness, practical comfort, location, and reliable local hospitality rather than luxury branding.
The hotels listed in the itinerary are our preferred properties. If a hotel is unavailable because of seasonal closures, operational changes, or booking demand, we will arrange a suitable alternative of comparable standard wherever possible.
Accommodation at Everest Base Camp is subject to more significant limitations and may require changes based on local regulations and operating conditions.
Our Advice: Expect comfortable accommodation for most of the journey, complemented by one deliberately simple overnight experience near Everest Base Camp. Bringing a flexible attitude toward facilities in remote locations will help you appreciate the extraordinary opportunity to stay beneath the world's highest mountain.
Dining along the Tibet to Nepal Tour is an integral part of the cultural experience. As you travel from the high alpine desert of the Tibetan Plateau to the mid-hills and subtropical valleys of Nepal, the regional flavors shift alongside the changing landscapes.
From warm Tibetan barley bread to traditional Nepali Dal Bhat, dining on this journey is simple, wholesome, and comforting—providing essential energy for long, scenic days on the road.
Daily Included Breakfasts
Breakfast is included every morning of your tour to ensure a stress-free start to your travel days:
- Tibet Section (Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyirong & EBC): Breakfasts reflect the practical, nourishing rhythm of high-altitude travel. Expect hot Tibetan noodle soups (thukpa), boiled eggs, toast with jam or butter, rice porridge (congee), steamed buns, and hot tea or coffee. At Everest Base Camp, warm porridge and Tibetan bread provide comforting fuel in the crisp mountain air.
- Nepal Section (Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Gorkha & Pokhara): In Nepal's cities and heritage lodges, breakfast options expand to include fresh tropical fruits, freshly brewed Himalayan coffee, made-to-order eggs, pancakes, hash browns, and toasted local breads.
Special Included Cultural Dinners
To celebrate the rich traditions of rural Nepalese hospitality, two distinctive dinners are included in your itinerary:
- Authentic Farm-to-Table Dinner in Nuwakot (Day 7): Served at The Famous Farm, this home-style evening meal features organic ingredients harvested directly from the lodge’s surrounding terraced gardens. Savor fresh seasonal vegetable curries, slow-cooked lentils, fragrant rice, and artisan local pickles (achaar) served in a peaceful Newari heritage setting.
- Traditional Hillside Dinner in Gorkha (Day 11): Hosted at Gorkha Gaun Resort, this evening meal offers a refined taste of Nepal’s historic mid-hill culinary traditions. Enjoy rich vegetable soups, spiced grilled meats, and a complete regional Thali platter while taking in sunset views over the valley.
(Note: On Day 8, you will also enjoy lively welcome/cultural folklore dinner shows featuring authentic multi-course Nepali dishes).
Independent Dining: Local Specialties & Regional Flavors
For lunches and non-included dinners, your local guide will recommend clean, reliable local restaurants, teahouses, and roadside eateries along the highway:
- Tibetan Plateau Specialties: Hearty, high-energy mountain dishes dominate the menu in Tibet. Must-try local staples include Momo (steamed dumplings stuffed with minced yak or vegetables), Thukpa (warm hand-pulled noodle soup in rich broth), Thenthuk (flat square-noodle soup), fried rice, and freshly baked Tibetan Barley Bread. Sip on traditional Butter Tea (Suocha) or sweet milk tea to stay hydrated and warm at high elevations.
- Nepali Mid-Hill Staples: In rural Nepal, Dal Bhat (steamed rice, savory lentil soup, seasonal vegetable curry, spinach, and crisp papadum) is the undisputed national staple. Refilled generously at local eateries, it is nutrient-dense, easily digested, and ideal for long drives.
- International City Dining (Kathmandu & Pokhara): Both Kathmandu (especially the Thamel district) and Pokhara Lakeside are world-renowned culinary hubs. Here, you will find an extensive variety of dining choices—from authentic Newari, Indian, and Tibetan specialty restaurants to high-end Western cafés serving artisan wood-fired pizzas, Italian pasta, bakeries, and organic Mexican or Middle Eastern dishes.
Dietary Needs & Vegetarian/Vegan Travel
- Vegetarian & Vegan Friendly: Vegetarian dining is exceptionally easy throughout both Tibet and Nepal due to widespread Buddhist and Hindu dietary traditions. Fresh vegetable momos, lentil soups, stir-fried greens, tofu, and Dal Bhat are universally available at every stop.
- Gluten-Free & Special Diets: Rice-based dishes (Dal Bhat, rice noodles, fried rice) are widely available. However, because wheat flour is a core staple in Tibet (breads, noodles, dumplings), travelers with severe gluten sensitivities should pack certified gluten-free energy bars, snacks, or soy-sauce alternatives for remote highway legs.
Realistic Out-of-Pocket Meal Budgeting
Meal costs along the route are straightforward and affordable. We recommend budgeting the following out-of-pocket estimates per person for non-included lunches and dinners:
- Tibet Highway & Remote Towns: $5 – $10 USD per meal
- Rural Nepal (Nuwakot, Gorkha & Highway Stops): $4 – $8 USD per meal
- Major Cities (Kathmandu & Pokhara): $6 – $12 USD per meal (Up to $15–$20 USD for premium international dining)
Daily Meal Budget Summary: Budget approximately $15 – $25 USD per person, per day for independent lunches, dinners, bottled water, and café beverages throughout the 15-day itinerary.
Food is an important part of the cultural experience on our 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp. From traditional Tibetan momos and warming noodle soups to Nepalese dal bhat, Newari specialties, and freshly prepared jungle resort meals, the journey introduces you to the distinctive flavors of two Himalayan destinations.
The tour includes daily breakfast throughout Tibet and Nepal, one traditional Nepali welcome dinner in Kathmandu, and full-board meals during your stay in Chitwan National Park. All other lunches and dinners are excluded unless specifically stated in the itinerary, allowing you the freedom to explore local restaurants and choose dishes according to your preferences.
Tibetan Cuisine & Dining Experiences
Tibetan food reflects the plateau's high-altitude environment, pastoral traditions, and centuries of cultural exchange with neighboring regions.
During your stay in Lhasa, Shigatse, and the Everest region, you may have opportunities to sample:
Momos: Steamed or fried dumplings filled with vegetables or meat, usually accompanied by a flavorful dipping sauce.
Thukpa: A hearty noodle soup prepared with vegetables and sometimes meat.
Thenthuk: Traditional Tibetan hand-pulled noodle soup, especially popular during colder weather.
Tsampa: Roasted barley flour, a staple of the Tibetan diet, traditionally mixed with butter tea or other liquids.
Tibetan Butter Tea: A distinctive salted tea made with butter, commonly enjoyed in Tibetan homes and traditional teahouses.
Yak Meat & Dairy Products: Regional specialties featuring yak meat, cheese, or dairy products, depending on local availability.
Lhasa and Shigatse also have restaurants serving Chinese, Nepalese, Indian, and selected Western dishes, offering a variety of dining options.
Meals Included in Tibet: Daily breakfast at your hotel or designated accommodation.
Meals Excluded in Tibet: Lunches, dinners, beverages, snacks, and personal food purchases are at your own expense.
Your Tibetan guide can recommend suitable restaurants during sightseeing excursions and along the driving route.
Dining Near Everest Base Camp
Food choices become more limited in the remote Everest region, where supplies and kitchen facilities are basic.
Meals typically consist of simple dishes such as noodle soup, fried rice, dumplings, vegetables, or other available local preparations.
Breakfast is included at the designated overnight accommodation. Lunch and dinner are not included unless specifically stated in your confirmed itinerary.
Travelers should expect limited menu choices, basic dining facilities, and higher prices than in major cities due to the remote location. Bringing a few familiar snacks is recommended.
Nepalese Cuisine & Culinary Traditions
Nepal offers a wonderful variety of regional cuisines shaped by its diverse ethnic communities, geography, and cultural influences.
Some popular dishes worth experiencing include:
Dal Bhat Tarkari: Nepal's traditional meal of steamed rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetables, and pickles or curries.
Nepali Momos: Dumplings filled with vegetables or meat, served steamed, fried, or with spicy sauces.
Newari Cuisine: Traditional Kathmandu Valley specialties such as bara (lentil pancakes), chatamari (rice-flour crepes), and choila (spiced grilled meat).
Sel Roti: A lightly sweetened, ring-shaped rice-flour bread traditionally prepared during festivals and celebrations.
Gundruk: Fermented leafy greens, often prepared as a soup or side dish.
Thakali Meals: Traditional platters featuring rice, lentils, vegetables, pickles, and optional meat dishes.
Kathmandu and Pokhara also offer an extensive selection of Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Asian, and Western cuisine, along with cafés, bakeries, and vegetarian restaurants.
Traditional Nepali Welcome Dinner in Kathmandu
One traditional Nepali welcome dinner is included during your stay in Kathmandu.
This special dining experience introduces you to Nepalese hospitality and regional flavors through a set menu of traditional dishes.
The welcome dinner is included once during the tour. Other dinners in Kathmandu are excluded unless specifically mentioned in the itinerary.
Dining in Kathmandu, Gorkha & Pokhara
Throughout Nepal's cultural and scenic destinations, you will have opportunities to explore local restaurants and discover regional specialties.
Kathmandu: Enjoy traditional Newari cuisine, Nepali restaurants, international dining, and the lively café culture of Thamel.
Gorkha: Discover traditional countryside cooking, including dal bhat, seasonal vegetables, lentils, and regional specialties.
Pokhara: Explore lakeside restaurants serving Nepalese, Tibetan, Indian, Asian, and Western dishes, often in relaxed settings near Phewa Lake.
Meals Included: Daily breakfast at your hotel, plus the single welcome dinner in Kathmandu.
Meals Excluded: All other lunches and dinners in Kathmandu, Gorkha, and Pokhara are at your own expense.
This arrangement allows you to select restaurants and meals based on your interests, appetite, and dietary preferences.
Full-Board Dining in Chitwan National Park
During your stay at Jungle Villa Resort or a similar property, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included as part of the full-board arrangement.
Meals are served at the resort and coordinated with your scheduled jungle safaris, nature walks, river excursions, and other wildlife activities.
Dining typically features a combination of Nepalese and familiar international dishes, with menu selections determined by the resort.
All included meals are provided on a set-menu basis. Additional food orders, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, specialty coffees, and other personal purchases are excluded unless expressly included in your confirmed booking.
Set-Menu Meal Arrangements
All meals included in the tour price are provided on a set-menu basis, rather than unlimited à la carte dining.
Menus are determined by the hotel, restaurant, or resort and may include a limited selection of dishes. Meal choices vary according to location, season, and ingredient availability.
Where breakfast is included, it may be served as a set breakfast or from a limited selection arranged by the hotel.
Additional dishes, room service, specialty beverages, alcoholic drinks, and other personal dining expenses are not included unless specifically confirmed.
Vegetarian, Vegan & Special Dietary Requirements
Vegetarian meals are widely available throughout Tibet and Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Pokhara.
Vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements can often be accommodated with advance notice, although choices may be more restricted in remote locations, especially near Everest Base Camp.
Please inform Far & High Adventure Travel of any food allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions when booking so that we can communicate your requirements to our local partners.
While every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate dietary needs, completely allergen-free preparation environments cannot be guaranteed.
Food Hygiene & Drinking Water
We encourage travelers to enjoy local cuisine while following sensible food and water hygiene precautions.
Choose freshly prepared meals, drink sealed bottled or properly purified water, and exercise caution with raw foods and unfamiliar street food.
Detailed food safety and preventive health recommendations are provided in our Critical Health Considerations and Vaccination Guide.
Our Advice: Take advantage of the flexibility offered by the breakfast-only arrangement outside Chitwan. Whether enjoying momos in a Tibetan teahouse, sampling Newari specialties in Kathmandu, discovering traditional countryside cooking in Gorkha, or dining beside Phewa Lake in Pokhara, exploring local cuisine is one of the most enjoyable ways to connect with the people and cultures of Tibet and Nepal.
Preparing for your 16-Day Tibet and Nepal Tour with Everest Base Camp involves organizing travel documents, arranging flights, preparing for moderate sightseeing, and packing for dramatically different Himalayan climates.
This journey takes you from Tibet's high-altitude plateau and the foot of Mount Everest to Nepal's historic cities, scenic valleys, and subtropical wildlife habitats. Thoughtful preparation will help you travel comfortably and make the most of each destination.
Essential Travel Documents & Entry Requirements
Travelers must satisfy the separate immigration and entry requirements of China (including Tibet) and Nepal.
Passport: Carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond your planned travel dates, with sufficient blank pages for visas and immigration stamps.
Chinese Visa or Visa-Free Entry Eligibility: Depending on your nationality, you may require a Chinese tourist visa before departure. Some nationalities qualify for visa-free entry under current Chinese policies. Confirm your eligibility well in advance.
Tibet Travel Permit (TTP): Foreign travelers require a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through an authorized travel operator. Far & High Adventure Travel coordinates the necessary application through our local Tibetan partners.
Additional Tibet Permits: Travel to the Everest region requires additional permits and local clearances, which our Tibetan team arranges as applicable.
Nepal Tourist Visa: Many nationalities can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Others must obtain a visa in advance. Verify the requirements applicable to your passport.
Travel Insurance: Carry documentation confirming appropriate medical coverage, including emergency assistance and evacuation for travel above 5,000 m.
We recommend submitting your passport information and any required Chinese visa documentation at least 45 days before departure, allowing sufficient time for Tibet permit arrangements.
Keep digital and printed copies of your passport, visas, permits, flight confirmations, insurance policy, and emergency contact information.
Planning Your International & Regional Flights
This itinerary begins in Lhasa, Tibet, and concludes in Kathmandu, Nepal. Travelers should plan their international flights accordingly.
Getting to Lhasa
Most international travelers reach Lhasa through major mainland Chinese gateway cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, or Xi'an.
Depending on your international flight arrangements, you may need a separate domestic flight to Lhasa.
We recommend allowing one or two nights in your Chinese gateway city before flying to Tibet. This provides additional flexibility for international flight connections and delivery of your Tibet Travel Permit when required.
Flying from Lhasa to Kathmandu
After completing the Tibet portion of the journey, you will return to Lhasa and travel to Kathmandu by air.
Nonstop flights between Lhasa and Kathmandu are subject to airline schedules and operational availability. Your final flight arrangements must be confirmed before departure.
This itinerary does not involve crossing the Tibet–Nepal land border.
Departing from Kathmandu
Your international return flight should depart from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM).
The itinerary also includes a domestic flight from Bharatpur to Kathmandu following your Chitwan stay, so there is no planned long-distance road transfer back to the capital.
Avoid booking tight connections between separate airline tickets. Where possible, allow additional flexibility for weather-related delays and schedule changes.
Physical Preparation & Travel Readiness
Although this is primarily a cultural sightseeing and scenic driving tour, a reasonable level of fitness will make the experience more enjoyable.
We recommend beginning a simple conditioning routine approximately 6–8 weeks before departure.
Walking: Build up to comfortable walks of 3–5 km (2–3 miles), several times per week.
Cardiovascular Exercise: Include cycling, swimming, brisk walking, or similar moderate activity.
Stair Training: Practice climbing stairs to prepare for monasteries, temples, historic sites, and hillside viewpoints.
Uneven Terrain: Become comfortable walking on stone pathways, cobblestones, and gently sloping trails.
Flexibility & Balance: Light stretching and balance exercises can improve comfort during sightseeing.
No technical climbing or multi-day trekking experience is required.
Because the itinerary includes an overnight stay near Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,200 m (17,060 ft), consult your physician or travel medicine specialist about high-altitude exposure before departure.
Detailed medical guidance is provided in our Critical Health Considerations and Vaccination Guide.
Money, Currency & Personal Expenses
You will use two different currencies during the journey.
Tibet – Chinese Yuan (CNY / RMB)
The Chinese Yuan is the local currency throughout Tibet.
Mobile payment platforms such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used in China, including Tibet. International visitors may be able to link eligible foreign bank cards, although verification requirements, transaction limits, and payment acceptance vary.
We recommend:
Setting up a suitable mobile payment method before departure.
Carrying Chinese Yuan cash for remote restaurants, small purchases, and situations where electronic payments are unavailable.
Using ATMs or currency exchange facilities in major cities such as Lhasa and Shigatse.
Budgeting separately for lunches, dinners, beverages, souvenirs, and gratuities.
Nepal – Nepalese Rupee (NPR)
The Nepalese Rupee is used throughout Nepal.
International credit cards are accepted at many established hotels, restaurants, and shops in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but cash remains important in smaller towns and rural areas.
We recommend:
Carrying a reasonable amount of Nepalese Rupees for meals, small purchases, and tips.
Using authorized exchange counters or ATMs in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Keeping smaller banknotes for local markets and incidental expenses.
Carrying some clean, undamaged US dollar banknotes as a backup for currency exchange.
Local digital payment systems such as eSewa, Khalti, and Fonepay may not be practical for short-term international visitors without compatible local banking arrangements.
Budgeting for Excluded Meals & Gratuities
The tour includes daily breakfast, one Nepali welcome dinner in Kathmandu, and full-board meals during the Chitwan stay.
Other lunches and dinners are generally excluded.
Set aside a personal budget for these meals, beverages, laundry, optional activities, shopping, and tips.
Gratuities for guides, drivers, hotel staff, and naturalists are discretionary and should reflect the quality of service received.
Packing for Tibet & Nepal
The most important packing strategy is layering.
During the same journey, you may experience freezing temperatures near Everest Base Camp, cool mornings on the Tibetan Plateau, pleasant afternoons in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and warm, humid conditions in Chitwan.
Choose versatile clothing that can be combined or removed as conditions change.
Clothing for Cold & High-Altitude Conditions
2–3 moisture-wicking thermal base layers.
1–2 fleece jackets or insulated mid-layers.
One warm, hooded down or synthetic insulated jacket suitable for sub-zero temperatures.
A windproof and waterproof outer jacket.
Lightweight waterproof trousers or a compact rain layer.
2–3 pairs of comfortable travel or hiking trousers.
Warm thermal sleepwear for the Everest Base Camp overnight.
A wool or fleece hat, insulated gloves, and a neck gaiter or scarf.
Clothing for Kathmandu, Pokhara & Chitwan
4–5 lightweight, breathable shirts or tops.
Comfortable lightweight trousers and casual clothing.
A light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.
A sun hat and lightweight rain jacket.
Modest clothing for monasteries, temples, and religious sites.
Neutral-colored, breathable clothing for jungle excursions.
Avoid relying entirely on heavy winter clothing, as Nepal's lower elevations can be considerably warmer than Tibet.
Footwear & Walking Accessories
Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots with good traction.
Lightweight casual shoes or sandals for hotels and relaxation.
Several pairs of moisture-wicking socks, including warm socks for Tibet.
Optional walking poles for uneven pathways and hillside sightseeing.
Heavy mountaineering boots are not necessary for this itinerary.
Personal Gear & Daypack
Bring a comfortable 20–30-liter daypack for daily sightseeing and road journeys.
Useful items include:
Refillable water bottle.
UV400-protective sunglasses.
High-SPF sunscreen and protective lip balm.
Hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes.
Moisturizer and saline nasal spray for dry conditions.
Compact travel umbrella or rain protection.
Small flashlight or headlamp.
Personal medications and basic first-aid supplies.
Copies of essential travel documents.
A few familiar snacks for long drives and remote locations.
A lightweight sleeping bag liner may provide additional comfort during the Everest Base Camp overnight.
Electronics, Charging & Connectivity
Smartphone and charging cables.
Universal travel adapter suitable for Chinese and Nepalese electrical outlets.
Portable power bank, preferably 10,000–20,000 mAh.
Camera, spare batteries, and memory cards if required.
Offline maps, travel documents, and essential contact details saved on your devices.
Some international websites, messaging platforms, and online services are restricted in mainland China, including Tibet. Check connectivity options before departure and ensure any digital services you intend to use comply with local regulations.
Mobile reception and charging facilities may be limited near Everest Base Camp.
Luggage & Domestic Flight Allowances
A medium-sized suitcase or durable travel duffel is suitable for most travelers.
Pack a smaller carry-on bag containing medications, travel documents, valuables, electronic devices, and essential clothing.
The itinerary includes flights within China or between Tibet and Nepal, as well as the Bharatpur–Kathmandu domestic flight. Baggage allowances vary by airline, route, fare type, and aircraft.
Check the confirmed baggage limits for each flight before packing. Excess baggage charges, when applicable, are normally the traveler's responsibility.
Travel Insurance & Emergency Planning
Comprehensive travel medical insurance is required for this journey.
Your policy must cover medical treatment and emergency evacuation associated with high-altitude travel, including the Everest Base Camp overnight at approximately 5,200 m.
We recommend verifying coverage to at least 5,500 m, along with medical evacuation, hospitalization, repatriation, and trip interruption protection.
Keep your insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number accessible and share relevant medical information with your travel companions or tour leader when appropriate.
For more detailed medical preparation, refer to our Critical Health Considerations and Vaccination Guide.
Travel Mindset & Cultural Etiquette
A flexible and respectful attitude is just as important as good equipment.
Respect local religious traditions and dress modestly when visiting sacred sites.
Ask permission before photographing individuals, monks, or religious ceremonies.
Follow your guides' instructions regarding photography restrictions, protected areas, and cultural etiquette.
Allow for occasional adjustments caused by weather, road conditions, flight schedules, or local regulations.
Approach unfamiliar food, customs, and daily routines with curiosity and an open mind.
The facilities and pace of life in remote Himalayan areas may differ from those in major international destinations. These contrasts are part of the journey's distinctive character.
